What is Vinyasa Yoga?

You see "Vinyasa" Yoga on the schedule and think "Sounds nice...but what even is that?”


Vinyasa Yoga is one of the most common classes you’ll see offered at yoga studios, yet the deeper meaning behind the word is often overlooked.


Contrary to the way it has been largely portrayed, "Vinyasa" does not mean fast-paced or cardio-driven. It is not a form of calisthenics, acrobatics; nor is it performative in nature. 


Vinyasa is derived from the Sanskrit term "nyasa," which means “to place,” and the prefix "vi," which means “in a special way.”  It is a style of yoga that links mindful movement and intentional breath to attain balance in the mind and body and foster a deep spiritual

connection.


Rushing to get on our mats, and then rushing while we are on our mats, is counterproductive to a fundamental aim of yoga: to achieve calm in body and mind. Channeling our efforts into finding an equal measure of effort and surrender in the opposing forces we encounter "on the mat" prepares us for the opposing forces we encounter in our "off the mat" experiences...again and again.


May we find inspiration in the ancient sutra Sthira Sukham Asanam, adapting the principles of steadiness and ease, courage and grace, and stability and fluidity in our practice. If we can cultivate these grounding qualities in our minds and bodies, not only do our lives become more peaceful and harmonious, but everyone around us benefits.


This is the true Vinyasa. Not how we move, but how we live.
